Forces recruiting PCSO's:

Information

If you would like a well-paid and interesting job as part of the police family, being a PCSO might be just the job for you.

Pay for police community support officers (PCSOs) varies from force to force, usually starting at just over £16,000 (although those working in London will receive more), and rising steadily as you gain experience (in some areas to £26,000).

PCSO s receive a wide range of benefits, including a fair and inclusive promotion policy, flexible working hours and more.

Benefits

If you become a PCSO you can expect:

  • a flexible working schedule
  • paid over-time
  • a minimum of 21 days annual leave
  • fully paid sick leave.

Am I eligible?

Have you got what it takes to become a police community support officer?

Applicants are welcomed from all backgrounds and ethnic groups. Applicants are not limited to any particular age group - in fact, those who are looking for a career change are encouraged. Unlike the requirements for regular police officers, there is no minimum age to apply

Basic guidelines for applicants

  • there are no minimum or maximum height requirements
  • there is no formal educational requirement, but you will have to pass written tests
  • only applications from British citizens, EC/EEA nationals, Commonwealth citizens, or foreign nationals with indefinite leave to remain in the UK will be accepted
  • A number of crimes will mean a definite or likely rejection of your application, including anyone who has received a formal caution in the last five years, committed a violent crime or public order offence
  • you must physically and mentally able to undertake police duties
  • you will need to complete a medical history questionnaire and undergo an eyesight test satisfactorily before appointment
  • some tattoos (whether visible or not) and facial piercing might be unacceptable.

What happens after I apply?

Once you have submitted your application to become a police community support officer, this is what happens next.

Once you submit your application it will be reviewed, and if it passes an initial assessment, you will be asked to attend an assessment centre to:

  • take a written test
  • be interviewed
  • take part in interactive role-plays.

If these tests go well, you will need to undergo background and security checks, and a basic medical examination.

If all of these are clear, you will be recommended for appointment to a force in your area.

Many training options

Each force currently has its own training programme for incoming police community support officer ( PCSO) candidates. However, to reflect the increasing importance of PCSOs and the professionalism of the police force, a new PCSO training programme was introduced in April 2006. The new training programme will be national and will be assessed against recognised National Occupational Standards (NOS).

Many forces are recruiting as the numbers of PCSOs are increasing across the country.

To find the nearest Force to you that is recruiting PCSOs , select a county from the list below where you would like to work. The system will then show vacancies in increasing distance from that county.
